Daylight saving vs standard time
Standard time is the baseline; daylight time is the summer offset. Most of the year is not standard time, which is why “EST” in July is almost always wrong.
The short answer
Standard time is a zone's baseline offset. Daylight time is that offset plus one hour, used through the lighter half of the year.
The counter-intuitive part: in countries that observe it, daylight time covers more of the calendar than standard time does — about eight months against four. So the “standard” label is the exception, not the rule.
The pairs
Every observing zone has two names and two offsets:

Note the UK's summer name is BST — British Summer Time, not "GMT+1" in everyday speech. GMT is the UK's standard time, which is why saying "GMT" in July is the British version of saying "EST" in July.
Eight months versus four
In the US, daylight time runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November — roughly 2026-03-08 to 2026-11-01 this year. That is about 34 weeks of daylight time and 18 of standard time.
So for most of the year, the "standard" abbreviation names something that is not currently in effect. Writing EST, CST, MST or PST between March and November is usually a mistake, and a scheduling tool that takes it literally will be an hour out.
What to use instead
ET, CT, MT, PT. These name the zone rather than one of its two states, so they are correct in every month. The UK equivalent is simply "UK time" or the city.
Better still, name the city. "3pm New York" resolves through the time zone database to the right offset on any date, including inside the transition weeks.
Why "standard" is the baseline at all
Standard time is the zone's underlying legal offset, set by reference to a meridian. Daylight saving is a seasonal statutory modification applied on top of it. Legally the standard offset is the definition and the summer offset is the adjustment — even though, in practice, the adjustment is in force for longer.
That is also why proposals to make daylight saving permanent are framed as changing the standard offset rather than as "keeping DST forever": what would actually happen is that the baseline itself moves.
Places with only one
Non-observing zones have a standard time and nothing else. India is UTC+5:30 year-round. Arizona stays on MST in every month. For those places the standard abbreviation is always correct, which is one fewer thing to get wrong.
