World time clock
Every place on earth reading the same instant differently — and the reason the whole system works is that underneath, they are all reading the same one.
The short answer
Every local time in the world is the same instant plus an offset. There is one moment; there are about forty different ways of writing it down.
The reference is UTC, currently —. Every zone is defined as UTC plus or minus some amount, which is why converting between any two is a matter of arithmetic on a shared baseline rather than a lookup between every possible pair.
One instant, many labels
This is the idea that makes global timekeeping tractable.
When it is 12:00 UTC, that same moment is 07:00 in New York, 13:00 in Berlin, 17:30 in Mumbai and 21:00 in Tokyo. Nothing about the moment differs. Only the label does.
Because everything is defined against a single reference, you never need a conversion table between every pair of zones — you need each zone's relationship to UTC, and the rest is subtraction.
Why offsets exist at all
Before railways, every town kept its own solar time — noon was when the sun was highest, which differed by a few minutes between neighbouring towns. That was fine when the fastest travel was a horse.
Railways made it untenable. A timetable needs the two ends to agree what time it is, and a system where every station has its own clock produces collisions. Britain adopted a single railway time in the 1840s; the US followed with Standard Railway Time in 1883; the international meridian conference set the global framework in 1884.
So time zones are an artefact of transport and communication, not of astronomy. The sun does not have zones.
What "world time" is measured against
UTC is maintained by atomic clocks and kept loosely in step with the earth's rotation, which is neither perfectly constant nor perfectly predictable.
When the two drift apart by nearly a second, a leap second is inserted to resync them. These have been added irregularly since 1972, and the international body responsible has voted to discontinue the practice by 2035 — largely because they cause more trouble in computing than they solve in astronomy.
For everyday purposes this is invisible. It matters if you are timestamping financial transactions or navigating spacecraft.
GMT is not quite the same as UTC
In ordinary use they are interchangeable — both are UTC+0.
Strictly: UTC is an atomic time standard; GMT is a time zone based on mean solar time at Greenwich, and it is what the UK uses in winter. In summer the UK moves to UTC+1, so "GMT" stops describing British local time even though people keep using it that way.
For writing things down, prefer UTC — it names a standard rather than a country's current season.
